Otis Wheat

(James Buckelew/ Tracy Hagans) Music of C and P BMI

Grandaddy said kids gather round. Gotta story I wanna tell y'all about.

There was a mountain of a man who lived in the swap land. And everybody in town they shunned him.

I remember Mama tellin' me. Stay away from Otis Wheat.

Nobody knew where Otis came from. And nobody cared 'cause he was different.

He had long hair and a shaggy beard. All the descent folk, they called him wierd.

And the whole town agreed. Stay away from Otis Wheat

They said he was no good, A mighty troubled man.

As dangerous as a gator, a snake, or quicksand,

Distance is the one thing you wanna keep.

No matter what you do son, stay away from Otis Wheat.

It was a hot summer day in mid July. Me and these three friends of mine.

Went down to the swamp to go for a swim. I Never saw that gator 'til I jumped in.

Eye to eye with death, Ready to attack. Out of nowhere Otis Wheat jumped strattled his back.

Otis and that gator went round and round. 'Til the black water bayou finally pulled him down.

We placed a wreath in front of that creek. In the name of Otis Wheat.

They said he was crazy, A mighty troubled man.

As dangerous as a gator, a snake, or quicksand.

Let me tell you this, I wouldn't be here to speak.

Or share this story with you.

If it hadn't been for Otis Wheat.
